We, the Seniors of 1949, dedicate this

SENIOR CLASS HISTORY

In September, 1945, thirteen "Green Freshies" started to high school at
Galena. They were - Loraine Roof, Susan Porter, Dorothy Denty, Ramona
Cockrell, JoAnn Sewell, Howard Hale, Johnny Christy, Charles Edwards, Bob
Jackson, Ralph Meadors, Bob McClary, Wendal George, and Bob Edwards. The
Seniors of "45" really decked us out on initiation day. Mrs. Culver was our
homeroom and English teacher, Miss Campbell taught Latin I, Miss McCormick
taught science, Mrs. Kelly taught algebra and Mr. Souders was the Superintendent.

We were all quite pleased the following year when we all entered the
Sophomore Class. We had a few new members. They were Dean Cockrell, and
Richard Stauch. During the year Sharon Smith, Ronald Beddow, and Cliff Searle
joined us. Wendal George joined the Armed Forces. This year we had several
new teachers. Mrs. Hacker was our homeroom and commercial teacher, Miss
Sproul taught music and English and also directed the band. Superintendent
Souders taught civics and occupations, Miss Campbell taught Latin II history of
Ohio, and biology, Mr. Hoke taught plane geometry. He was also the coach of
the high school basketball team and they got as far as the district tournament.
Several of the Sophomore boys were on the team and so we were quite proud
of them.

When school started in September 1947, we found we had lost Ronald
Beddow, Dorothy Denty and Susan Porter, Dean Cockrell and Richard Stauch.
However, Virginia Ault and Mac Work entered Galena school as "Jolly Juniors."
The main event of this year was our Junior play "Along comes Charlie" which
was directed by Miss Campbell. Other big features were the Christmas Ball,
and the Delaware County Musical held in April. The Juniors also decorated the
auditorium for commencement and Virginia Ault, Sharon Smith, JoAnn Sewell
and Loraine Roof were ushers. The teachers this year were - Mr. Furniss,
homeroom, English, and coach of the basketball and baseball teams. Miss
Campbell taught world history, Mr. Hoke taught physics, music , and was the band
director. Mrs. Kelly taught commercial subjects. Mrs. Smith taught social
subjects. Superintendent Souders was the mechanical drawing teacher.

When we came back to school in September 1949, we found wedding
bells had rung for Ramona Cockrell. Good luck, Ramona. also we had lost
Mac Work, Sharon Smith, Virginia Ault, Bob Edwards, cutting our class down to
eight members. Bob Ranney moved in but didn't stay long while Cliff Searle left
the first of the year. We have had a lot of fun this year with half-days off occasion-
ally to have our graduation pictures taken, to pick apples and to sell advertising
for the annual. Our teachers this year were Mr. Hoke, chemistry, plane geometry,
music, and band director. Mr. Furniss, homeroom, English, and also coach of
the consolation champs (basketball). Mrs. Smith, American history and American
government and Mrs. Kelly, commercial subjects. We will present our class play
in April. This is Auntie's Money, and will be directed by Mrs. Smith. We consider
ourselves very lucky because we have had two teachers who have taught in Galena
all the while we were in high school. They are Mr. Souders and Miss Campbell.
We are planning a big trip after school is out in May. With all the excitement of
being Seniors, I think we are all looking forward to May 19, 1949 when we will graduate.</text>

CLASS PROPHECY OF 1949

As we gaze into our crystal ball we see Mrs. Ralph Meadors, formerly
Miss JoAnn Sewell, rushing busily around her swanky penthouse. Attached very
firmly to her apron strings are Ralph Jr., Jody and little Neuter. After going
to Bliss, she was hired by her high school beau to be his secretary. She got
more interested in the boss than she did in the job and after two hours persuasion
they got hitched.

At 4 a.m. we see Mssr. Ralph Meadors tiptoeing into the boudoir. After
a hard day's work of painting scrumptous pin-up girls he answers "Yes, my
dear" to Jo's "Is that you honey-pie?" Ralph gave up the boring job of being
the commercial artist of all commercial artists to enter the different type of work
he is now doing but not by Jo's decision.

Well, look! There's "Big Wheel" Hale. "Dutch" Howard H. Hale is
owner and supervisor of a 5,000 acre pig-raising farm. Bachelor Hale with all
his millions and his expert ability to call hogs has never quite persuaded anyone
to venture into matrimony because of some reason.

We now see Charles W. Edwards as an expert in child Physiology. Since
seeing the movie "Sitting Pretty" he decided he could handle kids better than
electrical appliances.

Looking into the left side of our crystal ball we see Robert Jackson
McClary sleeping peacefully in a lounge chair of the Stevens' Hotel which he just
bought with one of his millions of dollars. When trying to make up for the
sleep he lost in history class he made history while sleeping under a tree in
Texas. He was suddenly awakened by his dear devoted mother-in_law, Mrs.
G.S. and having dislodged a rock or so, up popped a gusher of oil. As we see
him at the age of seventy-five he is still trying to catch up on sleep and dreaming
of ways to spend his millions.

We thought we were through but here comes Mrs. Kenneth Crowl, formerly
Miss Loraine Roof, late as usual. She formed the habit of being late in high
school and was slightly late for her wedding even. She is now designing clothes
for her ten children. The Crowl girls' softball team has won quite a few games
but this is partially due to the score-keeping of Kenny Jr. the youngest of the
Crowl family.

Well, I guess that takes care of all the prophecies. Look for ours next
year.

Wait a minute! Bob got so used to being tardy that he almost didn't
made it before we put our crystal ball away for this year. Robert Randolf
Jackson is a prominent banker (just as Mr. Furniss predicted when he arrived
at school at 9:00 every morning). In his spare time he revises history books
because he has a great desire for studying it. His version of history differs
somewhat from Riegal's. Nancy and their three little angels, Eeny, Meeny, and
Miny (there isn't any Moe, yet) are trying desperately to awaken him to begin his
day's work at the bank.

JUNIOR NEWS
On September 7, 1948, a small class of nine entered the Junior class to face
our homeroom teacher, Mr. Henry Furniss. The Juniors were Marilyn Bennett, Barbara
Farris, Nondus Miesse, Gertrude Cushman, Bonnie Cantleberry, Lois Luthi, Edna Evans,
Roy Burdette and Ronald Smith. Since then we have lost Edna Evans, Roy Burdette, and
Ronald Smith joined the armed services. This leaves us an unusual class of six girls.

Our Junior year has been very progressive, we think. We have had several scrap
and paper drives, saved tax stamps, and taken part in the Hallowe'en carnival. But the
most important event of the year was our Junior play "Indian Doll" which was under the
direction of Miss Helen Campbell.

On the 23rd of December we all enjoyed our Christmas party and exchange of
gifts at the Farris home.

We also sold personalized stationery.

Along with the hard work and fun we have all had a swell time being Juniors but I
bet the teachers are surely glad to get rid of us.

FRESHMAN NEWS

The Freshman Class of '49 started to high school September 7, 1948.
There were fifteen students; eight girls and seven boys. During the year we welcomed
Ann Ball from West Virginia and Barbara Kirk from Pickerington High. We lost
Ann Ball to Gahanna Lincoln and Otto Cockrell through quitting school.

In October we were initiated by the seniors. Most of the girls dressed in
men's clothing worn backwards, although there were a few exceptions. Some
boys were dressed as women, carrying dolls and clocks and other things. Others
were dressed in various ways. That evening a wiener roast at Ruffner Park was
given by the Seniors. We sang and played games. The food was delicious and
everyone had a good time.

Later in the year the sophomores gave us a wiener roast too, which was
held at Dr. Ihle's home. We square danced and played games. All the eats were
good and we had a nice time.

At Christmas time we had a gift exchange and refreshments at school.
On Valentine's Day we did the same thing.

We haven't studied as hard as we could (so we've heard) but we'll all try
real hard the remainder of this year and all of the next.

SOPHOMORE NEWS

The graduating class of 1951 started its sophomore year with thirteen
members. Marie McCoy from West Virginia being our only new member. The
first that was in store for us was picking out our class rings. After much
deliberation we decided to get them from the Josten Company. They were delivered
early in February.

In the meanwhile we elected our officers and they are as follows: Dayna
Bricker, president; Eldon Chambers, vice-president; and Betty Bolton, secretary-
treasurer.

Our first project was the Hallowe'en carnival. We chose as our candidate
for queen, Dayna Bricker. Our class had bingo and on the side we had a haunted
house which proved very successful.

Next was our turkey raffle, which was won by Mr. Zwayer. This also helped
our class treasury. Marie McCoy left our class to move back to West Virginia
and Jim Cantrell left us also.

We had a Christmas party at Dayna's home and had a grand time. We also
had a scrap drive which, with the help of Lowell Booth and Vernor Green was a great
success.

Dave Meloy moved here from Groveport. We're glad to welcome him. We think
we have had a very nice sophomore year and we hope to have as nice a year next year.

SEVENTH GRADE NEWS

The first important event of the year was the election of class officers
which was done at the first meeting called on the 6th day of October. Gee Fuller
was elected president, Donna Mae Griffith was elected vice-president, and Mary
Lou Atkinson was elected secretary-treasurer.

For Hallowe'en the school celebrated with a Hallowe'en carnival in which
the seventh grade took part by presenting a corn contest.

The next meeting was called on the 1st day of December 1948, at this
meeting we decided to purchase some Christmas tree lights. Miss Campbell,
our homeroom teacher, bought a Christmas tree for the seventh grade room.
We decided to buy a present for Miss Campbell for Christmas. Mary Lou bought
a bottle of perfume for her. We had our gift exchange on December 24.

Larry Williams moved to California during the first part of February so
we had a farewell party February the 2nd for him at the home of Donna Mae
Griffith.

We expect to enjoy many more pleasant meetings and activities.

EIGHTH GRADE NEWS

Well, its a sad story of what happened to the poor eighth grade of 1948-
49. We started the year with twenty-four students but by the end of the first
semester our star pupil was going to move. It was a great blow to the eighth
grade to lose their class president, Jean Cox. Betty Caudill, vice-president
came into office and is doing a good job.

The class took in a net profit of about $10.00 this year, all of which
was made at the Hallowe'en carnival. In the second semester our fair class
was enlightened by the arrival of Stanly Sartwell of Michigan. To make a
short story longer we didn't do hardly anything all year.

But we're happy!

FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE NEWS

We started our year of 1948-49 with thirty pupils in our fourth grade and
ten in our fifth. It had been decided that the fifth grade should be departmentalized
and this gave us the other ten fifth graders for half the day. Fifty pupils fitted
in quite snugly, but we have all enjoyed having the fifth with us. We set as our
goals at the beginning of the year that every pupil in the fourth grade should be
able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide well and that the fifth should in addition to
all this work know their fractions well. We are going to have this accomplished and we
are also very proud of our good readers. To our room, it is most important that
studies come first. To supplement the traditional subjects we added small work
books of science and nature study.

We have made posters to be used in connection with history and geography,
have completed a number of small projects, and are looking forward to more. As
our classroom motto we chose - good behavior, study, work, and play, and we have
tried to emphasize these merits in order given. Each week we have had a small
party, have celebrated several birthdays, and we wish to thank all the mothers who
contributed to our parties.

In conclusion, I think that we can say that even under difficult circumstances
and divided classes, we have had a very pleasant and rewarding year. We are very
justly proud of all our pupils and proud of most of those who left our room for
other schools, and have continued their good work there.

FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADE NEWS

This is a short account of our fifth and sixth grade class during the school
year of 1948-49. We started off the year with several contests. We won ten dollars
for having 100% membership in the P.T.A. drive. We sold seeds and collected
around $35 which we are going to use on a trip to points of interest in Galena and
to the museum in Columbus.

Five sixth grade boys were chosen to be highway school patrolmen. They
were Randall Griffith - Captain, Clarence Christy, Dallas Hubbard, Billy Liming
and Michael Harroun. We even got new uniforms and we like them very much.

We decorate the room for different holidays and right now we have wind-
mills and pictures of George Washington on the blackboard. On our bulletin board
we have a lot of interesting pictures of snowstorms in the west and pictures of scenes
in Ohio.

FIRST GRADE NEWS

In September, school begins! How we have counted the days! Hear the bell?
The first day of school is here. We are in the first grade. Our smiling faces told
how happy we were that day.

We had our County Fair Exhibit in our room and we each received our
ribbons. On Armistice Day we gave our Flag Exercise and sang songs and said
pieces about the Flag. At the Thanksgiving Party we were the Pilgrims and the
Indians of long ago. Ours were the faces you saw in the Christmas Wreaths on
the stage at the Christmas Program. During February we talked of "Honest Abe"
and George Washington and Betsy Ross as she made the flag. We enjoyed our first
Valentine Box and looked at our Valentines again and again. Since September, we
have lost many teeth, and have had many birthdays and our toothless smiles
tell of our happiness now. You'll be seeing us for several years.

SECOND GRADE NEWS

We, the second grade started out our year with thirty-two in our class.
Since then we lost Billy Lyons and Lona Cantrell. Then we added Stanley Seevers
from Columbus, Robin Meloy from Edwards School and then Ilona Cantrell came
back from Sunbury. Karen Barrick came to us from Millersport and Joan Kirk
from Pickerington. this makes us thirty-four.

In the fall we spent a lot of time studying the Indians and making an
Indian Village. Now we are busy putting things of interest in our scrapbooks.

THIRD GRADE NEWS

We, third graders of '48-'49 are the rovers of Galena School. We've had
four different classroom of varying descriptions. We're finally in the new
addition and enjoy having a real homeroom all our own.

After starting out in September with twenty-four students, we've increased
to twenty-seven and have lost none.

GALENA - HARLEM BAND NEWS

There are nineteen members in the band, nine of which are from
Harlem High School and ten are from Galena High School.

The band director, Mr. Hoke, gets the band together every Thursday
evening for a good practice, the practice is held in the Galena School one
practice and the Harlem School the next practice.

Mr. Hoke worked very hard to get the band in shape for the marching
and playing at the Delaware County Basketball Tournament, and I am sure
that everyone will agree that the band did a fine job.

A few members of the band from each school participated in the All-
County Music Festival which was held March 25, 1949 at Gray Chapel in
Delaware.

MIXED CHORUS NEWS

The mixed chorus of Galena High School put in a great deal of time trying
to sing and they have made much progress. The mixed chorus had chosen from
its member eight students to sing in the Delaware All-County Music Festival,
they were: Bonnie Cantleberry and Lois Luthi to sing soprano: JoAnn Sewell
and Loraine Roof to sing alto: Charles Edwards and Russell Fry to sing tenor:
and Ralph Meadors and Robert McClary to sing bass.

The girls' glee club sang at the Junior play and the girls' and
boys' glee club took part in the Christmas Program which was held in the
schoolhouse December 20, 1949.

Mr. Hoke, the director, has been very patient with us and has worked
very hard to accomplish so much progress.

We are looking forward to mixed chorus next year although we will
miss the Seniors.

Moodespaugh and Fry tied the score at 50. With only about thirty seconds to
go Joe Shoaf made a corner shot to win the game by a score of 52 to 50.
Moodespaugh and Hale were high for the winners with fifteen and thirteen.

Galena wound up their season league play with a hard fought game with
Sunbury. At the half the score showed Galena ahead by four points but the final
score was 34 to 31 in favor of Sunbury. Moodespaugh was high scorer with
twelve points.

Galena's first game in the tournament was with Ashley, the league
champs. Ashley jumped to an early lead and went on to win by a score of 36 to
58. Moodespaugh and Hale were high scores for the losers with twelve and
eleven.

By losing the Ashley game Galena moved into the Consolation Tournament
to play Harlem. Harlem and Galena played on even terms the first quarter but
Galena went on and won 44 to 36. Hale was the leading scorer with twenty points.

The next team Galena met in the tournament was Radnor. The score was
close all through the game. With about twenty seconds to play Fry made the win-
ning basket to keep Galena in the running for the Consolation Championship.
Hale was leading scorer with nineteen points.

The Consolation Championship pay-off game found Galena playing
Ostrander. Galena led all the game until the last quarter when Ostrander took
the lead. With ten seconds to play Joe Shoaf was fouled while shooting. Joe
made both fouls good and won the game for Galena by a score of 41 to 40. Hale
was high scorer for the winners with sixteen points.

The last game of the season for Galena was with Orange. The game was
to decide which team would represent Delaware County as the third team in the
District Tournament. It was a hard fought game which ended with Orange on top
by a score of 42 to 35. Hale was high scorer for the losers with eighteen points.

This ended the basketball season of '48-'49 for Galena Indians with a final
record we are all proud of with fifteen wins and six losses. Galena won three
trophies - Consolation Championship, Good Sportsmanship Trophy, and Cheer-
leading Trophy.</text>
