Couldn't get in the main building and weren't so very comfortable in the old bldg. so, after motoring a good bit the day of the 22nd and visiting a lot with the dear friends who had come nine hundred miles to be with us for a few days, while we had gone about five hundred miles to see them. Found comfortable rooms in a private home for them up town. Different people we talked with said we should go to the Indian powwow up the river a few miles. We had seen a number of Indian shows-mainly in Fla. which for the most part were more or less of a farce, but we went and were richly rewarded. The white chief surely knows how to stage a show. It was simply fine from start to finish. There were Indians from seven states- Mi.-Neb, Okla Kan, Iowa, Minn and California all dressed in their wonderful leather, head, feather etc took pickup We really were sorry when the show was over. Lord Cornwallis took it over for his headquarters when fighting in this section. He was living here at the time of his surrender. Gen Nelson ordered his soldiers to fire on it, even tho it was his home. Several bullets may be seen embedded in the walls. A woman of wealth has taken it on and restored it, as nearly as possible as in Colonial and Rev. War days. One dollar admission fee is charged. Proceeds go to charity. It is east of Berryville Virginia, In this house, called Audley, Nellie Custis-Lewis died. Why she left the splendid Mansion called "Woodlawn" close by Mt. Vernon I do not know. Washington was so pleased because his beloved step-granddaughter married his favorite nephew, Fielding Lewis he bestowed upon them 2500 acre, of his big plantation. I can't help wondering why they left it and went to Berryville, and this plain little house. It was said to be very lovely in the inside. I believe Nellie moved here after her husband died. Berryville is the home of ex Gov. Harry Byrd-Admiral Byrds ho. This is one of the greatest fruit sections in the U.S. I see it every once in a while- Aug 31 last time. Title A name given to the resource A Brief History of the Lee House Description An account of the resource This house was the center of some of Virginias finest culture, during several genera- tions of Lees who lived in it- The last notable one was Gen'l Robt. E. Lee. His father was born at Leesylvania, but six other well know Lees were born and reared under the roof of this "Stratford." The first two were members of Virginias House of Burgesses. Two others were signers of the Dec. of Independence, and still two more occupied posts of honor abroad and at home. In the Court House in Montross (where we spent the nite in hotel--,Aug 24-1930) there are oil portraits of all this notable Lee family as well as of Washington, Wm Pitt, and tablets of interest. A patriotic Soc. is restoring the old mansion, with me, May Green, Louise Sheets and Louise Griffeth-Burrer. Taken when went to Annapolis-from Washington, D.C. 1930 I was not again in Annapolis til Aug. 1937, when I left Sunbury, Ohio, with brother Vachel Green-sister Mona Green, with Murl Davis at the wheel. We spent one nite near Hancock, Md, turning south for Baltimore, where noonday lunch was enjoyed in a very nice big cafeteria. Afterwards going on to Annapolis. A Hollywood Co. was filming in the chapel, so we couldn't see John Paul Jones buried there.
