Visited the campus of the University of Wisconsin and drove up and down its streets and around its fine buildings. Left by a road that gave glimses of Lake North of city. The Lake we camped beside is South of city. The country we travelled thru enroute to Kilbourne City was similar to our home section of Ohio, except as we neared Devils Lake, which is quite hilly -even more so than about Granville, O. A motorist we met on the way said if we wished to see a minature Swiss scene to visit Devils Lake, which we did- on a detour that took us to south end of Lake first, which isn't quite so attractive as the North and which is just off Baraboo road. Title A name given to the resource Lake St Madison WI Description An account of the resource On Aug 17-1925, accompanied by Chas Daily of Colorado Sprs who had come from Western Elec. Plant, Chicago the 15th to visit Ohio relatives of his mother, we started early toward Chicago. with Chas Wheaton at the wheel for a hundred miles or so. After lunch, somewhere close to, or in Indiana, Chas. Daily became chaffeur and surely did delight in "stepping on her",-to my discomfort and dismay and, -well, all but anger. Especially as we neared Chicago, because there were so many, close together, sharp turns in Northern Indiana roads. Reached South Chicago for early lunch and there Chas. Daily left us. Camp sites around S. Chi. did not suit us, so we just kept on driving, as the sun was still shining until came to Joliet (Ill) city camp, where decided had enough motoring for one day 339 mi- a big record run, because had two drivers. Description An account of the resource Aug 18-1925 After breakfasting in Juliet started toward Wisconsin, a lovely drive thru a lot of nice towns had heard of. Roads fine and splendid. Not far from Chicago towns, Way up toward Madison there was a detour and we had trouble finding the right road. Pretty nearly ran out of road at one time, then had to go back a few miles but finally reached Madison, Wis. Drove about the city a little, stopping to visit a fine hotel where dinner was found in the basement. Learned the city camp is in a city Park on Lake- which we had passed going in. It is a large wooded park and has fine camping facilities. In the sunset glow on the water the dome of the capitol was reflected from shore to shore. The capitol is on a hill and the streets radiate from it like the spokes in a wheel. Night of Aug 8 was spent here with hundreds of other motorists. Vertical left side: State House in distance. Description An account of the resource Going to Devils Lake, just before reaching that body of water you go down a long winding hill and the scene in photo is on your left-showing in immediate foreground. Baraboo Golf Course and way off on the hillside the nice little city of Baraboo. Some of the Ringling Circus folk still live there. There are beautiful scenes in this region of Wisconsin. I believe this photo was snapped as we were leaving the lake region to go on thru Barraboo to Kilbourne City Left afternoon of 20th of Aug. for Kilbourne. I chose a route out of Baraboo that took us past the grave (roadside) of Yellow Thunder, famous Indian Chief and his squaw. Yellow Thunder history in this part of Wisconsin is very interesting. At one time he was chosen to go to the Great White Father in Washington to- intercede for his people. That "set up" Mrs Yellow Thunder considerably. Description An account of the resource Reached Kilbourne City, on the Dells of the Wisconsin Riv. quite in good time Thursday P. M. Aug 20. Chas. had attended the wedding of Brother Otis and Grace Schofield here in Aug. 1893- five months or less before we were married, Jan 4-1894. We rode up and down the main through fares, Chas. occassionaly spying some spot he recalled having seen 32 years previously. Finally we found Schofield place-for the most part unchanged all these years excepting a fine large house has been erected within recent years in the park-like yard- tho the old Schofield cottages still remain. We camped on beyond the Schofield place in the municipal camp. On the next afternoon we drove several miles to meet the Hatchards who came down from Winnipeg to meet us.
